Way too long ago, back when the weather was nice and I still wandered with my camera….let’s not talk about that – let’s focus on where I went instead….I went to the Odd Fellows Home in Liberty, Missouri to wander around. The Odd Fellows Home is now the Belvoir Winery (which is a pretty awesome 2 for 1 stop if you ask me). Thankfully the place was pretty quiet when I went, plenty of room to wander around and take in everything. Inside the main building is the winery, it’s small (it was still pretty newly open then and they were trying to get their footing). But you have free wander of the building. The floors creek beautifully inside – they kept a lot of the history of the place so you can read what happened within these beautiful walls.
If you wander around the grounds, that’s when you find the really awesome things. I’ll be the first to admit if there were doors swinging open I went inside to see what was there (I can’t pass up abandoned anything). Sadly a lot of the buildings had been badly vandalized inside, but you could still see the rich history.
Walking around with the wind slightly blowing hearing the doors creek was pretty awesome. There’s rumor that the place is haunted, the former asylum residents coming out to play when the mood strikes them.
On to the pictures….I could babble about this amazing experience all day long I think.

I’ve been absent for a while…oh I’m still here, but am I taking pictures? Nope. Mother Nature has been toying with me, all of a sudden it’s cold out again, the heater has come on, jackets are being taken out of the closet so I bury myself in video games and books because that’s the perfect way to hibernate. Today, it’s a beautiful 64 degrees outside; I’m not hibernating, I’m making bacon cupcakes. Yes, folks, I have jumped on the Bacon Cupcake Bandwagon and I am so glad I did! Perfect delicious heaven in your mouth!
I’m going to give you the recipe for the frosting for these cupcakes, I wasn’t too impressed with the cake recipe I saw online so I stuck with my own chocolate cake recipe because I know it works. These cupcakes were super easy to make and even kid approved! *cheers*
2 sticks unsalted butter; room temperature
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 pound confectioners’ sugar
1/3 cup pure maple syrup; plus more for drizzling – please make sure you do actual pure maple syrup for this one, your mouth will thank you
1 teaspoon salt
For the frosting:
Cream the butter in the bowl of an electric or stand mixer. Add the vanilla extract, salt and pure maple syrup and combine well.
Begin adding in the sugar and mixing thoroughly after each addition. After all of the sugar has been added and mixed thoroughly, give it a taste and decide if you want to add in more maple syrup. For thicker frosting you can gradually add in a little more sugar.
Garnish with chopped bacon and a drizzle of pure maple syrup (optional).
I tried to drizzle some maple syrup on top and it almost seemed like overkill on maple, so I just left them as is.
Let me know if you try them and what you think, if you need me I’ll be in the corner quietly finishing off this batch.
Today I set out on a day trip, I needed to get out of the house and have some time with my camera. The first small town I went to was a flop, so we won’t mention that. I was a little crunched for time so I headed to Weston, MO. Small towns are excellent places to get detail pictures and just watch the locals. There was a wedding going on today (the groom was gorgeous and the bride was beautiful) I wanted to sneak a picture of the bride, but I was too slow. I also wanted to tackle the groom with my camera, but I was too busy staring with little hearts above my head. hehehe Anywhooo….small towns. Today I got some awesome detail pictures and I made a new friend that I named Cattitude, this cat just stared at me, then I pet it’s head and it became my friend, it (I wish it was easier to tell boy cats from girl cats) jumped up on the bench for more lovin’ and even gave me some attitude when I bent down to get it’s picture. Also, in the first picture, see that balcony, that one in the front with the torn awning? I have claimed that as mine, I want to move in there, drink tea and watch the world go by…well, watch the small town go by. And because I love benches, I left you a Weston bench too, there will be more benches to come on this blog of mine.

I love this book and I love Sarah Addison Allen. She has a way of writing that just flows over you and leaves you seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling all of the things she’s writing. I find myself reading her sentences over and over again hoping I can absorb it and keep it with me forever.
Today I went to the Kauffman Memorial Gardens not only to get out of the house, but also because I have been craving flower pictures. Absolutely craving them. I sort of got my fix, there were a lot of people out enjoying the sunshine as well. And while their company really helped me practice my street photography, it didn’t help me get in the zone at all. But at this point I’ll take what I can get. Also I love that it’s all the rage now to take pictures of your shoes wherever you are. I’ll take that over taking pictures of my lunch any day!
The dandelions outside gossiped about being wildflowers, the tulip listened intently waiting for her sisters to bloom, even the creeping flocks crept closer to listen in. They didn’t mind the sprinkles of rain, they actually lifted their faces to the rain loving the way the delicate drops glistened on their petals. They didn’t mind that I came along with my camera either, they all seemed to stretch higher and get that beautiful glow that photographers love. When I was done I smiled and thanked them for their time.
I love Spring.
I figured since my About Me page (work in progress) is kind of bare I’d give all of you a little introduction as to who I am. Hiiii my name is Amanda <waves> I am a wanna-be photographer and a wanna-be writer and a wanna-be world traveler. I find that posting photography comes easy to me (ok I lied, I do have a very hard time figuring out which pictures to share; more about that later), writing about my photography (or anything in general) is a little bit bigger challenge for me. I’d love to have the words stream from my fingers into these magical sentences that helps people see what I see, or maybe they’ll think “huh, I am so glad I’m not the only one that does that” or even “wow that recipe looks good and I am so glad she posted it” or maybe it’ll just make them smile…I’m ok with that, too. <grin>
For years I kept a personal journal about what I was thinking and feeling and I found over the years that became harder to do, I have somehow bottled up all of this creativity inside me and just let it evaporate over time. I’m not sure why, I know I am my own worst enemy and that I can self sabotage better and faster than anyone I’ve ever met. (there’s where that having a hard time finding pictures to share bit comes in) The goal now is to change all of that. Now in present day 2014 I am working on my personal journal again. It’s not as easy as it used to be, but the whole point is I’m trying.
In this blog I’d like to write about my photography, my travels and my experiences. I’d also like to share any recipes I find that are good and maybe do a little creative writing along the way.
If you are an aspiring photographer, writer, painter, <insert anything here> I’d love to hear from you…let me know you are there so I can follow you, too. I love to be inspired by others.
My hope is that with this blog I will break out of my shell I have put myself in. I want to stop standing in my own way and I want to share what I can create with the world. I love taking pictures and I love to paint, but I feel like both are wasted if they just sit in my little world without getting out into the big world; after all a lot of people on the Internets have inspired me, my hope is that one day I’ll inspire one of you.
